Origin

Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted near the city of Hamadan in north-western Iran. This Hamadan comes from the small village of Angelas. Hamadan lies in the middle of a well-watered fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh, at the foot of the Zagros foothills. Rug knotting has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is really a collective name, because rugs from many of the surrounding places come onto the market in Hamedan. What is typical of rugs from Hamadan is that they are knotted with a single weft. That means one weft thread is inserted after every row of knots. Persian rugs are usually knotted with two or three wefts. This old Hamadan Angelas is around 90 years old and a real collector's piece.

Pattern

The lush floral motifs of this Hamadan Angelas are elegant and wonderfully varied. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The edge of the rug is framed by a decorative border. The border forms a beautiful contrast with the centre.

At the heart of the central field of this Hamadan Angelas lies the symmetrical centrepiece, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, creating the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The background of this Hamadan Angelas is antique pink. The border is worked in beige, rust red and dark blue. In the beige centre, pink and dark blue are combined.

Condition

You're not the first to take a liking to this Hamadan Angelas. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was hand-knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The pile has grown only a little thinner over the years. We haven't fully restored this Hamadan Angelas because we feel it has a special charm exactly as it is. If that's what you'd like, we'll of course be happy to carry on with the restoration for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Hamadan Angelas was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Hamadan Angelas are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.
