A knot density of approx. 150,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking work visible – right down to the finely executed details. At 185 × 137 cm, it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. Origin

Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted near the city of Hamadan in north-western Iran. This Hamadan comes from the small village of Angelas. Hamadan lies in the middle of a well-watered fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh, at the foot of the Zagros foothills. Rug knotting has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name, because rugs from many of the places listed below come onto the market in Hamedan. What is typical of rugs from Hamadan is that they are knotted single-wefted. This means that one weft thread is inserted after every row of knots. Persian rugs are normally knotted with two or three wefts.

This Old Hamadan Angelas is around 96 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Hamadan Angelas was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Hamadan Angelas are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Old Hamadan Angelas has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The pile has become just slightly thinner over the years. We have not fully restored this Old Hamadan Angelas, because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be happy to restore it further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a nearly perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
