Origin
Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic of them are abstract geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. The geometric and, more rarely, floral motifs are typically rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control. The most important rugs from the Caucasus include the Kazak, Bukhara and Shirvan rugs. This old Caucasian rug is around 90 years old and a real collector's piece.
Pattern
The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Caucasian rug its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural features. It fits beautifully into any setting and complements the furnishings of a room in a subtle way.
The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.
The repeating elements of this Caucasian rug have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming without ever being boring. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.
The background of this Caucasian rug is wine red. The border is worked in olive green, dark red and light brown.
Condition
This Caucasian rug has a story to tell. It was hand-knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The fringes have suffered a great deal over the years and could do with a repair. We haven't restored this Caucasian rug because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you'd like us to, we'll gladly restore the rug for you, of course. Either way, this Caucasian rug will give you pleasure for decades to come.
Material
The pile of this Caucasian rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Caucasian rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and flexible, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
