Old Kayseri in pure silk
This one-of-a-kind piece in dark red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 350,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 183 × 124 cm, it works beautifully as a small living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin
Kayseri (Latin Caesarea, named in honour of the Roman emperor Tiberius) is the capital of the province of the same name, Kayseri, in Cappadocia in Turkey. Kayseri rugs (also Kaiseri rugs) are usually made of pure silk. They are highly valuable and decorative. Kayseri rugs are typically knotted in smaller sizes and used as wall hangings or prayer rugs. This Old Kayseri in pure silk is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.
Material
The silk of the pile of this Old Kayseri in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern shine in ever-changing facets, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Old Kayseri in pure silk into a real jewel and gives the room an atmosphere that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be made that are still tear-resistant despite their light weight. This fine yarn allows smaller knots to be tied and therefore finer patterns to be created. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk.On this Old Kayseri in pure silk, even the foundation has been made from pure silk. Thanks to the thin yet hard-wearing material of the weft and warp threads, a particularly fine knotting – and therefore a particularly fine pattern – is possible.
Condition
This Old Kayseri in pure silk has a story to tell. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partially restored condition. A round mark left by a vase or table and a partly worn pile are the flaws to note. We have not fully restored this Old Kayseri in pure silk because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we are of course happy to carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
