Old Kazak

This rug in dark blue and dark red unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine detailing. At 183 × 111 cm it suits a bedroom or study. It shows just as well in a small living room. The one-of-a-kind piece brings individual character to the room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

This Old Kazak is around 106 years old and a genuine collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Kazak is made of new wool.

Condition

This Old Kazak has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1920. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has grown a little thinner over the years. The edges and fringes of the rug are damaged in places and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Old Kazak, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Kazak will bring you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
