Old Kazak

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in dark blue and dark red. The knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 183 × 125 cm it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. It is equally at home in a seating area. Colouring and texture give any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece made to last for years.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

This Old Kazak is around 106 years old and a genuine collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Kazak is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Kazak. It had owners before you who treasured and used it. It was knotted around 1920. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The pile of this Kazak has grown a little thin in places over the years. The edges and fringes could also do with a repair. We have not fully restored this Old Kazak, because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
