Place of origin

The city Kerman (also Kirman) is located in the southeast of Persia at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. Kerman is situated along old caravan routes and has a centuries-old tradition in both handicrafts and trade. Kerman is mentioned in Marco Polo's travelogue Il Milione. Fine patterns, sinuous lines and soft color gradations are characteristic of Kerman rugs. The classic patterns of the 19th century are often figurative. Hunting scenes and animals were represented alongside mythological figures or historical persons. The wide range of colors in Kerman rugs is particularly enriched by various shades of red, traditionally extracted from scale insects.

This rug comes from the village Levar near Kerman, but bears the typical pattern of Kerman rugs. This old Kerman Lavar is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.

Patterns

The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

The luxuriant flower motifs of this Kerman Lavar are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.

In the middle of the central field of this Kerman Lavar is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The background of this Kerman Lavar is beige. The border features old rose and blue gray. The old rose center combines the colors blue gray and golden beige.

Condition

You are not the first to appreciate this Kerman Lavar. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1930. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.

Material

The pile of this Kerman Lavar has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Kerman Lavar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
