Old Keshan

This one-of-a-kind piece in wine red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 250,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine execution of the details. At 397 × 270 cm it works beautifully as a large living-room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic structure lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. Origin

The central Persian city of Keshan (also written Kashan or Keschan) lies between the mountain slopes of the Zagros range and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that crossed the country, it was – at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan – a flourishing metropolis, known above all for its fabric and rug production. To this day the city is shaped by the elegance and splendour of that era. Keshan rugs are artful textiles made in an age-old tradition. In Keshan, production traditionally took place in the weavers' own homes. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool, which makes it particularly dense and compact.

This old Keshan is around 86 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this old Keshan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. The pattern has been worked in pure silk, so that the colours of this old Keshan's design shine in different facets, depending on how the light falls. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally proofed against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. Silk is gathered by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be made that are light in weight yet still tear-resistant. Fine yarn allows smaller rug knots to be tied and therefore more intricate patterns. This is why the world's finest rugs are hand-knotted from pure silk.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Keshan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This old Keshan has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 86. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.
