Old Keshan

This rug in light red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At around 360,000 knots per m², the work involved is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely executed details. Its 403 × 274 cm make it a large living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it lends the room a character all of its own and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

The central Persian city of Keshan (also written Kashan or Keschan) lies between the mountain slopes of the Zagros range and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that crossed the country, it was – at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan – a flourishing metropolis, known above all for its fabric and rug production. To this day the city is shaped by the elegance and splendour of that era. Keshan rugs are artful textiles made in an age-old tradition. In Keshan, production traditionally took place in the weavers' own homes. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool, which makes it particularly dense and compact.

This old Keshan is around 86 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Keshan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: the wool's natural lanolin content means the surface repels droplets of water, giving it a natural resistance to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Keshan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You aren't the first to take a liking to this Old Keshan. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The edges are damaged in places. In a few places the pile has grown a little thinner. The rug has a tear 5 cm long. We have left this Old Keshan unrestored because we feel it has a special charm exactly as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we are of course happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Keshan will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
