Old Kordi

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance meet in this rug in dark red and anthracite. The knot density of around 120,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 192 × 98 cm it is in good hands as a hallway runner. It works just as well beside the bed. Colouring and texture give any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for years.

Origin

Kordi (also Kord or Kurdi) is a collective term for rugs from Iran that are hand-knotted by Kurds. Koliai and Khorasan rugs are therefore, if you like, Kordi rugs too. As a rule, Kurdi rugs come from the Khorasan province. Less often they also come from the Turkmen-Afghan region.

In their rug knotting, the Kurds draw on every one of the classic provenances (source, origin). They don't copy the traditional patterns slavishly, though, but reinterpret them in their own distinctive way. The colouring in particular often departs considerably from the original patterns. That's why you'll find the most varied designs among Kordi rugs, though usually in a rather dark palette.

This old Kordi is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this old Kordi was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this old Kordi is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Kordi. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The fringes of this Kordi could do with a repair. We have not fully restored this Old Kordi because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course happily take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
