Old Kordi

This rug in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 120,000 knots per m², the intricate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the fine execution of the details. At 344 × 160 cm, it is well suited as a runner for hallways and entrance areas. It shows itself off just as well beside the bed. This one-of-a-kind piece brings individual character to a room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Kordi (also Kord or Kurdi) is a collective term for rugs from Iran that are hand-knotted by Kurds. Koliai and Khorasan rugs are therefore, if you like, Kordi rugs too. As a rule, Kurdi rugs come from the Khorasan province. Less often they also come from the Turkmen-Afghan region.

In their rug knotting, the Kurds draw on every one of the classic provenances (source, origin). They don't copy the traditional patterns slavishly, though, but reinterpret them in their own distinctive way. The colouring in particular often departs considerably from the original patterns. That's why you'll find the most varied designs among Kordi rugs, though usually in a rather dark palette.

This old Kordi is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this old Kordi was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this old Kordi is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this old Kordi. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted in around 1940. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. Minor repairs to the edges are needed. We have not fully restored this old Kordi, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
