Origin

Kordi (also Kord or Kurdi) is a collective term for rugs from Iran that are hand-knotted by Kurds. Koliai and Khorasan rugs are therefore, if you like, Kordi rugs too. As a rule, Kurdi rugs come from the Khorasan province. Less often they also come from the Turkmen-Afghan region.

When knotting their rugs, the Kurds draw on all the classic provenances (source, origin). They don't copy the traditional patterns slavishly, though — they interpret them in their own way. The colouring in particular often differs markedly from the original patterns. That's why you'll find the most varied designs among Kordi rugs, usually in a rather dark palette. This old Kordi is around 80 years old and a real collector's piece.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition gives this Kordi its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.

The repeating elements of this Kordi rug have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming, yet never dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over designs.

The background of this Kordi is dark blue. The border is worked in beige and rust red.

Condition

You aren't the first to take a liking to this Kordi. It had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was hand-knotted around 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The edges call for some minor repair work. We haven't fully restored this Kordi because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that's what you'd like, we'll gladly carry the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Kordi was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, has a balancing effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Kordi is made of new wool.
