Old Malayer

This rug in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 150,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 312 × 106 cm make it a living-room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.

This old Malayer is around 96 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Malayer are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and supple, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Old Malayer has a story to tell. It was knotted around 96 and has given loyal service ever since. Over the years the pile has become a little thinner in places. The edges are slightly damaged and could do with a repair. All in all it is still in good condition and can give pleasure for decades to come. We have not restored this Old Malayer because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would prefer, we are of course happy to restore the rug for you.
