Old Malayer
This one-of-a-kind piece in light red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 160,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the fine execution of the details. At 320 × 114 cm, it is well suited as a living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin
Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state. This old Malayer is around 86 years old and a real collector's piece.
Material
The pile of this Old Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Old Malayer are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and supple, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Malayer. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has grown a little thinner over the years. The edges of the rug are damaged and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Old Malayer because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Malayer will bring you pleasure for decades to come.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
