Old Malayer

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in dark brown and beige. At approx. 160,000 knots per m² the workmanship is correspondingly painstaking, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 452 × 102 cm make it a runner for hallway and entrance area. It shows just as well beside the bed. Colouring and texture lend any room a welcoming, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece made to last for years.

Origin

Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.

This old Malayer is around 106 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Malayer is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Malayer. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1920. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
