Old Malayer

This rug in dark red and terracotta brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At approx. 120,000 knots per m² the workmanship is correspondingly elaborate, recognisable in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 66 × 56 cm make it a small accent rug. It comes into its own just as well as a seating or wall rug. This one-of-a-kind piece brings individual character to the room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.

This old Malayer is around 66 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Malayer is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Malayer. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1960. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. We have not restored this Old Malayer, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Malayer will bring you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
