This one-of-a-kind piece in light red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 150,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the fine execution of the details. At 235 × 135 cm, it is well suited as a living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Meschkin Shahr is one of the oldest cities in Iran. It lies about 900 km from the capital, Tehran, in the north-west of the country in the province of Azerbaijan. The patterns of Meschkin rugs follow traditional Caucasian designs.

This Old Meschkin is around 96 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Meschkin was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Meschkin is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Meschkin. It had owners before you who treasured and used it. It was knotted around 96. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. There is a hole in the pile covering an area of roughly 10x5 cm. We have not fully restored this Old Meschkin, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
