Origin

The town of Meymeh lies in central Iran, some 100 km north of Isfahan. Typical of rugs from Meymeh is a pattern of small, symmetrical, geometricised orchids surrounding a medallion that is likewise geometric. The middle of the medallion, in turn, is graced by a kind of floral cross. The border is usually adorned with a geometricised Herati pattern. This design is known as "Djangali" – Persian for coming from the jungle. Meymeh rugs are knotted by hand using the Persian knot.

This Old Meymeh is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Meymeh was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Meymeh are made of cotton. The versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Meymeh. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The edges are damaged in places. The fringes could do with a repair. The pile is worn in places. The rug has a few smaller bald spots. In some places a few white threads are visible. That is entirely normal with older rugs. These are the knot ends of the weft and warp foundation, which work their way to the surface over the years. Structurally, this is not a major problem. We have not restored this Old Meymeh because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Meymeh will bring you pleasure for decades to come.
