Old Sanjan

This one-of-a-kind piece in rust red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 160,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 209 × 129 cm it works beautifully as a small living-room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. Origin

Sanjan (also Sandjan) lies in the west of Iran. The famous rug provenances of Hamedan and Bijar are in the immediate vicinity of Sanjan. The pattern of Sanjan rugs is not especially distinctive and often follows the typical designs of Hamadan rugs.

This Old Sanjan is around 66 years old and a genuine collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Sanjan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels water droplets and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Sanjan are cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Old Sanjan has a history. It was knotted in around 66. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
