Old Sarough

There is only one rug like this in dark red and dark blue: it unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 250,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise pattern drawing and the fine execution of the details. At 213 × 133 cm it suits the bedroom or study. It works just as well in a child's room or a dressing room. Colouring and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

This rug comes from Sarough (also spelled Sarouk, Saruk or Sarogh). Sarough is one of the best-known rug-knotting regions in Iran. Located in the western Persian province of Aarak, it takes in the provenances Arak, Djozan, Ghiasabad, Mahal, Malayer, Mohajeran, Sultanabad and Wiss. Persian patterns of every kind are knotted in Sarough, in some cases to the buyer's own specifications. Weavers there are especially fond of the neighbouring Farahan designs, of their own Sultanabad patterns and of the so-called Mir-i-Boteh pattern made up of paisley motifs. Typical of this type of rug is the very good wool quality of the pile, as the new wool comes from the Persian highlands. The foundation – warp and weft – is, however, usually made of cotton. In old and antique rugs you will often find a blue weft thread. The knotting is very fine and the pile relatively high.

This Old Sarough is around 106 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Sarough was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Sarough are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Sarough. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1920. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile and the fringes are a little worn in places and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Old Sarough because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course happily restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Sarough will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
