Shirvan rugs are hand-knotted in the eastern Caucasus in the Shirvan region. Shirvan rugs are knotted from exceptionally fine wool and have a flat pile. Old Shirvans are highly valued and very admired among collectors in Europe. It is not unusual for them to have a knot count of up to 300,000 kn/sqm.
The wide border is characteristic of the Shirvan rug. A wide main stripe is framed by 2 - 6 subsidiary stripes. The field is often dominated by imaginative geometric designs. The characteristic color of these rugs is often blue, but there are also red and ivory knots. The multi-colored patterns result in a fine and versatile color scheme. This old Shirvan is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Shirvan. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Shirvan is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Shirvan is rusty red. The border features dark green, black and rusty red. The dark blue center combines the colors olive green and light blue.
This Shirvan has a story. It was hand knotted about 1940. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
The pile of this Shirvan has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Shirvan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
