Old Shirvan

There is only one rug like this in dark brown and beige: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 90,000 knots per m², the painstaking work shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 260 × 102 cm it works well as a runner for hallway and entrance area. It also cuts a fine figure beside the bed. Colour and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no second rug shares.

Origin

Shirvan (also Schirwan) rugs are knotted by hand in the eastern Caucasus, in the Shirvan region. Shirvan rugs are knotted from exceptionally fine wool and have a low pile. Old Shirvans are greatly valued and highly rated among collectors in Europe. They not infrequently reach a knot count of up to 300,000 knots per m².

The wide border is characteristic of Shirvan rugs. A broad main stripe is framed by 2 – 6 secondary stripes. The field is often shaped by imaginative geometric patterns. In terms of colour, these rugs are frequently marked by blue knotting, but also by red and ivory. The many-coloured patterns result in a fine and versatile palette.

This Old Shirvan is around 96 years old and a genuine collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Shirvan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Schirwan is made of new wool.

Condition

This Old Shirvan has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1930. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good but unrestored condition. Over the years the pile has become a little thinner in places. The fringes and edges are also in need of repair. We have not restored this Old Shirvan, because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be glad to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Shirvan will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
