Origin

The pattern of this Oriental rug takes its cue from classic Persian rug designs. This rug was knotted in Turkey. This old Turkish Oriental rug is around 90 years old and a real collector's piece.

Pattern

The lush floral motifs of this Turkish Oriental rug are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.

This Turkish Oriental rug is graced with the so-called Mehrab or Mihrab motif. Mehrab refers to the Islamic prayer niche in mosques, which marks the qibla, the direction of prayer towards Mecca. Rugs bearing the Mehrab motif have traditionally been used by Muslims for prayer, which makes them especially precious.

The background of this Turkish Oriental rug is light red. The overall impression is also dominated by black and light red. The border is worked in beige, black and light red.

Condition

This Turkish Oriental rug has a story to tell. It was hand-knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. Over the years the pile has grown a little thinner. The edges and fringes of the rug are damaged in places and could do with a repair. A piece of the border is missing on both sides. We have not restored this Turkish Oriental rug because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would rather have it restored, we will of course be glad to do that for you. Either way, this Turkish Oriental rug will give you pleasure for decades to come.

Material

The pile of this Turkish Oriental rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Turkish Oriental rug is made of new wool.
