Old Turkish Oriental Rug

This one-of-a-kind piece in beige and light brown brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At around 120,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. Its 280 × 73 cm make it a hallway runner. It shows to equally fine effect in an entrance hall or on a stair landing. The harmonious colouring and the distinctive texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

The pattern of this Oriental rug is inspired by classic Persian rug designs. This rug was knotted in Turkey.

This old Turkish Oriental rug is around 56 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Old Turkish Oriental rug is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant-based dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical dyes. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, you even need two kilograms of weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is also time-consuming and labour-intensive. On top of that, fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Turkish Oriental rug is made of new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Turkish Oriental rug. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
