Origin

The pattern of this Oriental rug takes its inspiration from classic Persian rug designs. This rug was knotted in Turkey. This old Turkish Oriental rug is around 50 years old and a real collector's piece.

 

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition gives this Turkish Oriental rug its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the decor and the architectural elements. It sits beautifully in any setting and subtly rounds off the furnishings of a room.

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

At the heart of the central field of this Turkish Oriental rug lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.

The background of this Turkish Oriental rug is beige. The border is worked in terracotta, light green and beige. The light brown centre combines light grey and olive green.

 

Condition

You aren't the first to take a liking to this Turkish Oriental rug. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was hand-knotted in around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.

 

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Turkish Oriental rug is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant-based dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff for every kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, it even takes two kilograms of weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive too. And fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: because it is dyed with natural colours, the high-quality wool keeps its natural lanolin content. Wool that has been naturally dyed and hand-spun creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, unfolds as a contrast in modern interiors, but just as well in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country-house style. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Turkish Oriental rug is made of new wool.
