Origin

The pattern of this Oriental rug takes its inspiration from classic Persian rug designs. This rug was knotted in Turkey. This old Turkish Oriental rug is around 80 years old and a real collector's piece.

Condition

You aren't the first to take a liking to this Turkish Oriental rug. It had owners before you who valued and used it. The fringes could do with a repair. It was hand-knotted around 1940. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. That is why it is – despite its age – in very good condition.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for this Turkish Oriental rug's pile is over 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is just as time- and labour-intensive. And fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: because it is dyed with natural colours, the high-quality wool keeps its natural lanolin content. Wool that has been naturally dyed and hand-spun creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, unfolds as a contrast in modern interiors, but just as well in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country-house style. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Turkish Oriental rug is made of new wool.
