Old Turkmen Rug

This rug in rust red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With approx. 200,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 157 × 125 cm make it a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece, it brings individual character to the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

This rug was knotted by members of the Turkmen tribes. The Turkmen are known above all for their Bukhara rugs. Bukhara (sometimes also written Bochara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan that lies on the former Silk Road. Although no rugs were actually knotted in Bukhara itself, the city gave its name to many Oriental rugs, because they were traditionally exported to the West from Bukhara. These rugs, however, were knotted by Turkmen tribes such as the Yomoudh or the Tekke.

This Old Turkmen rug is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Turkmen rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Turkmen rug is made of new wool.

Condition

This Old Turkmen rug has a history. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partially restored condition. Overall, some areas of colour have faded slightly and parts of the pile show the occasional worn patch. We have not fully restored this Old Turkmen rug, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be happy to carry on restoring it for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
