Old Varamin

This rug in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 160,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 105 × 86 cm make it a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into a room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Varamin (also spelled Veramin) lies a good 50 km south-east of Iran's capital Tehran, in the north of the country, and was an important administrative centre under Mongol rule. Because the capital Tehran is so close and wages there are higher, Veramin rugs are now hardly knotted at all. It is assumed that the knotting craft took hold here at roughly the same time as in Qom, that is at the beginning of the 20 century, and that the workshops were once set up by investors from Tehran. What speaks for this theory above all are the colour compositions of early Varamins, which recall those of Qom rugs.

This Old Varamin is around 76 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Varamin was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Varamin are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Old Varamin has a story to tell. It was knotted around 76. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The selvedge of this piece has been mended in places, and not entirely professionally. That would be easy to put right if you wish. We have not fully restored this Old Varamin because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would rather we did, we are of course happy to take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
