Place of origin
Yazd (also Yezd) is located in central Iran on the southern edge of the Dasht-e-Kavir, the Great Salt Desert, and is the capital of a province of the same name in south-eastern Iran. Yazd is one of the oldest cities in Iran. The oasis city, built largely from mud bricks, has existed since the third millennium BC. Due to its unique architecture, it is part of World Cultural Heritage. Today about 500,000 people live there.
Originally, Yazd rugs had a bluish pattern, but this gradually declined as production increased. Due to the great demand, local manufacturers increasingly adopted the patterns and colors of Kerman rugs, to an extent that contemporary Yazd and Kerman rugs are sometimes difficult to distinguish. This is made even more complicated by the fact that Yazd also produced rugs with Kashan patterns. This old Yazd is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Yazd. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Yazd are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The embellished edging (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
In the middle of the central field of this Yazd is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Yazd is dark blue. The border features dark blue, old rose and olive green. The dark brown center combines the colors dark blue and beige.
Condition
This Yazd has a story. It was hand knotted about 1960. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
Material
The pile of this Yazd has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Yazd are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
