Place of origin

Aubusson is a French community in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in the Département Creuse. Aubusson is world-famous for its rug and tapestry factories. Woven French rugs are also called Savonnerie rugs , after the most famous rug manufacturer in France. The name Savonnerie is derived from the place of production, an old soap factory. The color scheme is adapted to the fashion of the upper middle classes of the 18th century and designed for impressive representative rooms. The design elements are part of a spatial concept: the stucco, the furniture, its upholstery and the floor were often designed accordingly. The medallion decorated with tendrils and the equally decorated corners have a strong architectural structure. In Aubusson, rugs were made in the style of the Savonnerie manufactory, but were often of a slightly lower quality and knotting density than the Savonnerie rugs. However, some weavers of the Aubusson manufactories had such a good reputation that they received orders from the French royal court.

Very few people think of France, when it comes to the classic origin countries of rugs. However, for centuries traditional rugs have been made in France. Gobelin rugs have been produced in France since 1607 and as early as in the year 1627 the cloth manufacturers in Aubusson were granted the privilege by Louis XIII to produce rugs with the "façon de Turquie" seal.

The Aubusson rugs are distinct from the tapestry and Gobelin rugs. This is confusing and often done incorrectly, as tapestry is the French word for rug. Strictly speaking, however, in Germany we understand tapestry rugs to mean only hand-woven or hand-made fabrics that have a motif (so-called pictorial rugs). This antique Aubusson is a collector's item. It is about 140 years old and, therefore, a really special piece. Antique rugs like this Aubusson are still very popular and are sold at top prices by renowned auction houses.

Patterns

The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

The luxuriant flower motifs of this Aubusson are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.

In the middle of the central field of this Aubusson is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The background of this Aubusson is gray beige. The border features wine red, light brown and olive green.

Condition

You are not the first to enjoy this Aubusson. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand woven about 1880. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. We have not restored this Aubusson, because we think it is as it is effect. If that's what you would like, we will of course restore the rug for you. Either way, this Aubusson will provide you with satisfaction for decades to come.

Material

Aubusson rugs are known for their fine, smooth woven surface. Aubusson rugs are hand-woven and consist only of warp and weft threads, so they do not have a thick pile that is pointing upwards. The pattern is created by weaving colored weft threads into warp threads.

The weft threads of this Aubusson rug are made of virgin wool and form the pile as well. The warp threads are made from cotton.
