This one-of-a-kind piece in rust red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 90,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 100 × 65 cm it works beautifully as a small living-room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.

This Antique Bijar is a collector's piece. It is around 96 years old, and that alone makes it a truly special find. Antique rugs like this Bijar are as sought after as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Material

The pile of this Antique Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Antique Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is both tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Antique Bijar has had admirers before you. The fringes could do with a repair. It was knotted around 96. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.
