Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar a particularly thick, extremely hard weft yarn is beaten in. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are adorned with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern. This antique Bijar is a collector's piece. It is around 100 years old and for that reason alone a truly special piece. Antique rugs like this Bijar are as popular as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Pattern

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The lush floral motifs of this Bijar are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The background of this Bijar is rust red. The border is worked in rust red and dark blue.

Condition

This Bijar has a history. The pile is slightly worn. In some places you can see a few white threads. That is entirely normal with older rugs. They are the knot ends of the weft and warp weave, which work their way to the surface over the years. In substance, this is not a major issue. It was hand-knotted around 1920. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with great care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

Material

The pile of this Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Bijar is made of new wool.
