Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

This Antique Kazak is a collector's piece. It is around 96 years old, and that alone makes it a truly special piece. Antique rugs such as this Antique Kazak are still greatly sought after and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Material

The pile of this Antique Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Antique Kazak is made of new wool.

Condition

This Antique Kazak has a history. It was knotted around 1930. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good but only partly restored condition. The pile is worn in places. We have not fully restored this Antique Kazak because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course happily continue the restoration for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
