With a knot density of approx. 150,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine execution of the details. Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

This Antique Kazak is a collector's piece. It is around 116 years old, and that alone makes it a truly special piece. Antique rugs such as this Antique Kazak are still greatly sought after and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Material

The pile of this Antique Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Antique Kazak is made of new wool.

Condition

This Antique Kazak has a story to tell. It was knotted around 1910. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has become a little thinner over the years. The fringes of the rug have also suffered quite a bit and could do with a repair. Parts of the border are missing on both sides. We have not restored this Antique Kazak, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Antique Kazak will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
