Origin

The city of Kerman (also Kirman) lies in the south-east of Persia at around 2,000 metres above sea level. Kerman sits on the old caravan routes and looks back on centuries of tradition in both craft and trade. Kerman is mentioned in Marco Polo's travel account Il Milione. Rugs from Kerman are marked by fine patterns, flowing lines and soft gradations of colour. The classic patterns of the 19th century are often figurative. Hunting scenes and animals were depicted, as were mythological figures and historical personalities. The broad palette of Kerman rugs is enriched above all by its many shades of red, traditionally obtained from the cochineal insect.

This Antique Kerman is a collector's piece. It is around 106 years old, which alone makes it a truly special find. Antique rugs such as this Antique Kerman remain as sought after as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Material

The pile of this Antique Kerman was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Antique Kerman are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Antique Kerman. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 106. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The fringes could do with a repair. Several areas of the rug are discoloured. In some places you will see a few white threads. That is quite normal with older rugs. These are the knot ends of the weft and warp weave working their way to the surface over the years. In substance, this is not a major problem. The pile is worn in places. We have not restored this Antique Kerman, because we feel it has a particular charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be glad to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Antique Kerman will give you pleasure for decades to come.
