Antique Schirwan
This rug in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 120,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 174 × 120 cm make it a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into a room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin
Shirvan (also Schirwan) rugs are knotted by hand in the eastern Caucasus, in the Shirvan region. Shirvan rugs are knotted from exceptionally fine wool and have a low pile. Old Shirvans are greatly valued and highly rated among collectors in Europe. They not infrequently reach a knot count of up to 300,000 knots per m².The wide border is characteristic of Shirvan rugs. A broad main stripe is framed by 2 – 6 secondary stripes. The field is often shaped by imaginative geometric patterns. In terms of colour, these rugs are frequently marked by blue knotting, but also by red and ivory. The many-coloured patterns result in a fine and versatile palette.
This antique Shirvan is a collector's piece. It is around 116 years old, and that alone makes it something really special. Antique rugs such as this Antique Shirvan are as sought after as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.
Material
The pile of this Antique Shirvan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound. The weft and warp threads of this Antique Shirvan are made of cotton. This versatile material is both tear-resistant and flexible, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this Antique Shirvan. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 116 and has given faithful service ever since. The edges & fringes have suffered over the years and need repair. One corner is damaged as well. All in all it is nevertheless in good condition and can bring pleasure for decades to come. We have not restored this Antique Shirvan, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course be happy to restore the rug for you.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
