Origin
Rugs were in all likelihood known in China very early on. The Mongol invasion around 1279, which brought Central Asian rugs into the country that were used as tents and saddle gear, gave a boost to the local production that probably already existed in China at the time. An exhibition in Saint Louis in the USA in 1903 awakened interest in Chinese rugs in the Western world. Soon afterwards, rugs were being made in China solely for export to Europe and North America.A special case is the so-called American China rugs, which were knotted between 1900 and 1940 specifically for the American market. The colours and patterns of the American China rugs are more restrained than those of traditional China rugs and were adapted to the US American interior style of the time. Only a very few pieces found their way from the USA to Europe. This is why the so-called American China rugs are especially rare in Europe.
This antique US Import China Rug is a collector's piece. It is around 106 years old, and that alone makes it a truly special piece. Antique rugs like this US Import China Rug remain as sought-after as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.
Material
The pile of this Antique US Import China rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps to regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound. The weft and warp threads of this antique US Import China rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this antique US import Chinese rug. It had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 1920. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with great care. As a result it is in very good condition – despite its age.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
