Origin
A woven fragment that was probably once part of a blanket or throw. Unfortunately, we cannot attribute this textile fragment to a precise place of origin. An old Osback embroidered cloth: bungalow-like motifs in purple are worked across the whole of this fine cloth. The cloth is framed by a floral embroidered border, except on one side, where it simply ends open.
Pattern
The repeating elements in the central field of this textile fragment rug have no specific centre (a so-called repeat pattern). The recurring pattern feels calming without ever becoming dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.
The lush floral motifs of this textile fragment are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.
The background of this textile fragment is beige. The overall impression is also dominated by lilac and beige.
Condition
This textile fragment had admirers before you. It was hand-woven in about 1880 and has given faithful service ever since. A few holes and tears are obvious damage to this fine, enchanting cloth. Even so, it is in good condition overall and can give pleasure for decades to come. We have not restored this textile fragment, because we feel it has a particular charm exactly as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be happy to restore the rug for you.
Material
This antique textile fragment was made by hand from wool.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
