Origin and design

Ardabil is the birthplace and burial site of the Safavid dynasty (1501–1722), so important to Persia and the art of carpet weaving. This now rather insignificant provincial town became famous for the so-called Ardabil Carpet from the Ardabil Mosque, which was woven in the 16th century and purchased in the second half of the 19th century by the German Oscar Strauss on behalf of the Ziegler company.

Traditional Ardabil carpets are predominantly geometric in design and influenced by Caucasian carpets. However, they are easily distinguishable from Caucasian carpets. The pile wool is less lustrous and drier than Caucasian wool. Furthermore, most Ardabil carpets have a cotton base (weft and warp). Floral patterns are rare and, when they do occur, are usually geometric in design.
