Origin and design

The Bakhtiari (also spelled Bachtiars) are an ancient, widespread people living in southwestern Iran. The collective name for their carpets is Bakhtiar or Bakhtiari, where the "i" corresponds to the preposition "of." Bakhtiari carpets—that is, the carpets of the Bakhtiari people—encompass numerous sub-provenances with various pattern types. Despite their extensive range, Bakhtiari carpets are similar in their color compositions, their diverse craftsmanship, and their consistently floral design.

Natural dyes are preferred for Bakhtiari carpets. Despite their intensity, they have a pleasing effect and develop a beautiful patina over time. Commonly used colors include brown for the outlines, red, bottle green, yellow, and white as a brightener, which adds a touch of warmth to the carpet.
