Bijar

This rug in light red and dark blue exists exactly once: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 360,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. At 162 × 110 cm it suits a bedroom or study. It also cuts a fine figure in a small living room. Colouring and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.

Material

The pile of this Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Bijar. It has had owners before you who treasured and used it. It was knotted in around 1980. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. We have not fully restored this Bijar because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we are of course happy to carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
