At approx. 360,000 knots per m² the workmanship is accordingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 190 × 113 cm make it a rug for the bedroom or study. Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.

Material

The pile of this Bijar was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool, also spelled kurk, is a particularly fine knotting yarn that feels almost velvety. Kork wool is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of especially high quality. The pattern of this Bijar is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and let the colours glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Bijar. It had owners before you who valued and used it. Increased exposure to sunlight has changed the colours a little. In some places the Bijar rug looks slightly stained, though with a little time we can certainly remove that on request. It was knotted around 1995. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
