Bijar

This one-of-a-kind piece in dark blue brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 420,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the fine execution of the details. At 295 × 252 cm it works well as a living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a piece of furnishing – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.

Material

The pile of this Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You're not the first to take a liking to this Bijar. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 46. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partially restored condition. The edges would need mending in places. At one corner, two spots of roughly 10x10 cm each would need to be re-knotted. We haven't fully restored this Bijar, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you'd prefer otherwise, we're of course happy to take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
