Bijar

This rug in light red and black and white combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 360,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking work visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 300 × 200 cm it is perfectly at home as a living room rug. It also looks good under a dining table for four to six people. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character to a room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.

Material

The pile of this Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Bijar. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1970. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. Some of the edges are in need of repair. We have not fully restored this Bijar because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course be happy to take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
