Buchara

This rug in dark red exists in this form only once: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 490,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the fine detailing. At 161 × 95 cm it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. It also cuts a fine figure in a child's room or a dressing room. Colouring and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Buchara (sometimes also written Bochara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan on the former Silk Road. Although hardly any rugs were ever knotted in Buchara itself, the city gave its name to many Oriental rugs, because they were exported to the West from there. The rugs themselves were knotted by various Turkmen tribes, above all in the Caucasus, Persia and Afghanistan.

Buchara rugs are among the finest and best-loved rugs of Central Asia. That is also why the pattern has been copied in many countries, especially in Pakistan. These copies are sold as so-called Pakistan-Buchara.

Material

The pile of this Buchara was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Buchara are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Bukhara has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 2005. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The edges are damaged in places. The pile is worn in places. We have not fully restored this Bukhara, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
