Buchara

This one-of-a-kind piece in dark red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 360,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 190 × 125 cm, it works beautifully as a small living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Buchara (sometimes also written Bochara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan on the former Silk Road. Although hardly any rugs were ever knotted in Buchara itself, the city gave its name to many Oriental rugs, because they were exported to the West from there. The rugs themselves were knotted by various Turkmen tribes, above all in the Caucasus, Persia and Afghanistan.

Buchara rugs are among the finest and best-loved rugs of Central Asia. That is also why the pattern has been copied in many countries, especially in Pakistan. These copies are sold as so-called Pakistan-Buchara.

Material

The pile of this Buchara was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Buchara are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and pliable, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You're not the first to fall for this Buchara. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 16. We have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.
