Origin

Rugs were probably known very early on in China . The invasion of the Mongols around the year 1279, who not only brought Central Asian rugs with them but also used them as tents and saddlery, gave a boost to the local production that most likely already existed in China at the time. An exhibition in Saint Louis in the USA in 1903 awakened interest in Chinese rugs in the Western world. Soon afterwards, rugs were being made in China solely for export to Europe and North America.

Pattern

The lavish floral motifs of this Chinese rug are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant motifs, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The edge of the rug is graced by a surround (border) . The border forms an excellent contrast with the centre.

At the heart of the central field of this Chinese rug sits the symmetrical centrepiece, which is also medallion . The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion appears to float on the field.

The background of this Chinese rug is dark blue. Beige and dusky pink also dominate the overall impression. The border is kept in lilac. In the beige centre, dusky pink and lilac are combined.

Material

Chinese rugs are knotted from silky, lustrous wool hand-knotted. For our high-quality Chinese rugs, the wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. As is typical of Chinese rugs, the knot density is relatively low and the pile is sheared long.

The weft and warp threads of this Chinese rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchy, which makes it especially suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
