Origin

Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.

The pattern of this rug is inspired by the pattern of classic Chinese Qom rugs in pure silk. This rug, however, was knotted in China.

Material

The silk of the pile of this Chinese Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern shine in different nuances, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Chinese Qom in pure silk into a true jewel and creates an atmosphere in the room that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be spun that are light in weight yet still tear-resistant. The fine yarn allows smaller rug knots to be tied and therefore finer patterns to be created. This is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk.

With this Chinese Qom in pure silk, even the foundation was made from pure silk. Because the weft and warp threads are of this fine yet hard-wearing material, a particularly fine knotting and therefore a particularly fine pattern is possible.

Condition

This Chinese Qom in pure silk has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 2010. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. That is why – despite its age – it is in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
