Origin
The pattern of this rug is inspired by the patterns of classic Tabriz rugs. This particular rug, however, was knotted in China. The city of Tabriz (also written Täbris or Täbriz) on the northern border of Persia has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups, thanks to its position at the crossroads of numerous caravan routes. Although the city lies in East Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to the Turkish language. The bazaars of Tabriz have long traded in craftwork and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.
Pattern
The lavish floral motifs of this Tabriz are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.
The round format of this hand-knotted Tabriz is very rare and works beautifully in rooms with a round dining or living room table, for example.
In the middle of the central field of this Tabriz lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.
The edge of the rug is graced by a surround (border). The border forms a wonderful contrast to the centre.
The background of this Tabriz is wine red. The border is worked in dark blue, blue-grey and olive green. The beige centre combines dark blue and blue-grey.
Material
The pile of this Tabriz is knotted from what is known as kork wool. Kork wool (also spelled kurk) is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is particularly high in quality. The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchy, which makes it ideal for a hard-wearing foundation weave.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
