Origin

Djosan rugs are hand-knotted near the town of Djosan (often also written Jozan or Josan) in western Iran. The motifs of Jozan or Djosan rugs are inspired by those of Sarough rugs. They show delicate vase motifs, scrolling flowers or medallions with or without corner motifs. Jozan rugs are also known for their very strong base colours in red and blue and for their very good quality. Like Sarough rugs, Jozan rugs are knotted with a robust double knot. That, along with the high-quality wool used for the knotting, gives these rugs a very sturdy feel.

Pattern

Individual areas of the pattern have a higher pile than the rest of this rug. The patterns of modern rugs are tending to become plainer and more abstract. Playing with different pile heights is a new approach, and it has replaced more elaborate, more insistent patterns. Because parts of the pattern have been brought out in two dimensions, though, the rug never looks dull. The accentuation is out of the ordinary and has a truly distinctive effect.

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The lavish floral motifs of this Djosan are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The background of this Djosan is beige. The border is worked in dark red and beige.

Condition

This Djosan has a story behind it. It was hand-knotted around 1980. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. That is why – despite its age – it is in very good condition.

Material

The pile of this Djosan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Djosan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchy, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
