Filzy Ourain

This rug in cream white combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With around 40,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. At 88 × 58 cm it makes a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character to a room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Our Filzy Ourain rugs are made from wool that has first been shaped into felt heads of varying sizes. These felt heads are joined together to create a dense, hard-wearing weave. The result is a distinctive, appealing structure. Making a Filzy Ourain takes a great deal of time and skill, as every single felt head is shaped by hand.

The characteristic pattern of our Filzy Ourains is made up of diamonds that recall the typical motifs of the Beni Ourain Berbers. The pattern of the Filzy Ourains is created through the use of different colours and felt head sizes. The colours are usually obtained from natural dye materials and range from warm beige and brown tones to strong blues, greens and reds.

Filzy Ourains make a wonderfully cosy floor covering and a decorative element in any room. Their natural texture and fine quality give a space an inviting, refined atmosphere.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Filzy Ourain is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, you even need two kilograms of weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is labour-intensive and time-consuming too. On top of that, fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.
