Origin

Our Filzy rugs are made from wool that has first been shaped into felt balls of varying size. These felt balls are joined together to create a dense, robust fabric. The result is a distinctive, beautifully textured structure. Making Filzy rugs takes a great deal of time and skill, as every felt ball is shaped by hand.

The patterns of the Filzy rugs are created by combining different colours and felt-ball sizes. The colours are usually obtained from natural dyestuffs and range from warm beige and brown tones to strong blues, greens and reds.

Our felt rugs are a wonderfully cosy floor covering and a decorative element in any room. Their natural texture and high quality lend every space an inviting, high-end atmosphere.

Material

The technique used to prepare the materials for the pile of this Filzy is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, it even takes two kilograms of dyer's weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive too. And fewer and fewer people still master spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.
