Origin and design

Gabbeh carpets are woven by nomads living in the Fars province near the city of Shiraz. In Persian, "gabbeh" refers to high-pile carpets used for sleeping. Classic gabbeh carpets feature imaginative, naive geometric patterns and are very colorful. Modern gabbeh carpets are mostly found in solid colors and monochrome designs. However, stylized motifs from the daily life of the nomads, such as goats, camels, dogs, plants, or people, can still be found in the carpets. Gabbeh carpets typically have natural cream, brown, and gray tones, but vibrant yellow, red, or blue can also be found.
